Retirement can mean different things to different individuals. If you envision retirement as a life of complete withdrawal from the world, doing nothing but loafing throughout the day, then this book may not be for you. Achieving such a lifestyle typically requires inheriting a sizable fortune, which is rare for the average person. Even those who do retire this way are seldom happy, as I've observed around the world.

You can retire, regardless of your age, if you wish. I did, and I'm as average as any American. I have an average education and no extraordinary intelligence. I'm not particularly eloquent and certainly not a smooth talker. The need for a settled life came to me with the acquisition of a lovely wife and children, but it didn't mean returning to the monotonous grind of a typical job.

Currently, I make a sufficient income by writing and selling books by mail and online. This allows me to enjoy life in our own country with minimal effort. I plan to retire soon in or near Palm Springs, California — a true paradise in many ways. Perhaps I'll eventually find myself in Mexico, Europe, or the Far East.
